Granite Care
GRANITE CARE - DO’S AND DON’TS
With proper care your granite bench top or counter top will stay looking new for years and will outlast the rest of your home. Stone is one of the easiest surfaces to maintain.
Granite is the hardest possible benchtop material to use in your home.
In most cases there is nothing that will harm your granite benchtops. However to prevent that very, very rare case here is a list of precautions that you can take to maximise your granite counters timeless beauty.
DO NOT:
- Use any cleaning products other than those specified for use on stone products for your daily cleaning. We recommend and use MB Stone Care products, which can be purchased from our showroom.
- Use any products containing acid such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners or tub cleaners (eg Shower Power or Bam)
- Use soapy water, detergent or any home made concoctions (such as water and vinegar) as this can dull your stone.
- Use harsh alkaline-based cleaners.
- Allow foods containing acids such as wine vinegar or citrus juices to remain on the surface of the granite as these can seep into the surface and etch or dull the stone surface.
- Allow oil spillages to remain on the surface of the granite as this can seep into the stone and leave a mark.
- Use abrasive cleaners such as dry cleansers, scouring powders, or 'soft' cleansers (eg Jiff and Ajax).
- Place excessive weight on the granite top (eg sitting or standing) as this may cause the granite to crack under abnormal duress.
DO:
- Use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices. Many common foods and drinks contain acids that can etch or dull the stone surface.
- Use a soft, clean cloth to clean the granite.
- Reseal the benchtoptop every 2 – 5 years depending on the type of granite countertop installed (Check with the installer for recommendations). Use a non-toxic sealer on food preparation areas.
